Dolby DP571 Dolby E Encoder

Dolby E has been designed for use during multi-channel production for broadcast. Unlike Dolby Digital encoding, audio frames match video frames, enabling editing to video without first needing to decode the audio. The DP571 allows the transmission of up to 8 discrete channels of audio along with Dolby metadata (information about the data being transmitted) via an AES3 pair or via two PCM tracks of video or audio tape. Dolby E audio can withstand 10 or more encode / decode processes without audio degradation. The eight channel format allows a wide configuration of signals to be encoded into a two-channel bitstream, e.g., 6 channels of 5.1 audio and a stereo mix, or four stereo mixes. A metadata input is also provided, controlling aspects of audio reproduction for each user’s particular set-up.

As post-production migrates towards 24-frame acquisition and storage, the DP579 allows high quality Dolby E multi-channel audio and metadata to be stored on 24-frame systems using the existing DP571 and DP572 Dolby E encoder and decoder products. Converts tri-level video sync into Dolby Black, a reference signal for use specifically with existing Dolby E equipment. Also accepts traditional NTSC and PAL program and black reference. Together with a software upgrade for the DP571 and DP572 (included), the DP579 enables a pair of Dolby E codecs to operate at 23.98, 24, and 30 fps in addition to 25 and 29.97 fps.

The DP570 multichannel audio tool is designed to be used whenever 5.1 channel audio is created for delivery on DVD or DTV. It simplifies the monitoring and preparation of up to 8 channels of audio intended for Dolby E and/or Dolby Digital encoding. Its built-in router accepts up to 8 audio channels (4 pairs)in any order and outputs them in the SMPTE-recommended channel order. The DP570 also enables metadata (data about the audio data which is used by consumer Dolby Digital decoders) to be created or modified. It offers a method of measuring and setting a correct Dialogue Normalisation (dialnorm) value. Adjusting the metadata enables you to monitor the effects it has on the audio at the consumer’s decoder, ensuring optimum down-mixing quality. The metadata is output as a separate data stream for use with Dolby E or Dolby Digital encoders.
